On June 11, 2012 the restrooms at Crest Lake Park were welded shut. This was to be a temporary solution as recommended by Dr. Robert Marbut, a consultant, hired by the City of Clearwater to reduce street vagrancy.
The city maintains that this is a neighborhood park and these types of parks should not have restroom amenities. The cost to maintain and cleanse these types of neighborhood park facilities can no longer be absorbed by the taxpayers. For now the city's plan is to keep the restrooms shut and look at ways to enhance the park in the future. A city council discussion is scheduled to take place in March 2013.

I have issued a 30 day challenge to myself to spend at least one hour per day talking to visitors in Crest Lake Park. Through these conversations I am hoping to learn a little bit more about who visits the park, where visitors come from, what made them visit, how often they visit and if the restroom closure influences their activity and time in the park.
If you see me in the park please come and talk to me.
I also plan to work with the Skycrest Neighbors Association to present ideas for possible activities and programmed events in the park.

On more than several occassions I have heard Clearwater officials tell me that they would like to transform Crest Lake Park into something like Largo's Central Park. Families could enjoy the amenities of an upgraded and enhanced park. The park would have things like shelters for family picnics and birthday parties, maybe a fountain in the lake and a military court of honor. It wouldn't have to be done over night but there needs to be ideas to formulate a plan. So keeping the vision of Largo Central Park in mind I asked the City of Largo's Superintendent of Parks to come speak to us at our March 2013 meeting. He graciously obliged and spent part of his evening telling us how Largo's Central Park came to be what it is today. It was a very beneficial learning experience about how Largo operates this park. This was a recap of the evening as written by ClearwaterPatch Crest Lake Park Supporters Look for Success From Largo Central Park - clearwater.patch.com/articles/crest-lake-park-supporters-look-to-build-from-success-of-largo-s-central-park
